Lab-grown diamonds are a marvel of modern science, offering a sustainable and ethical alternative to mined diamonds. At Astrea London, we pride ourselves on creating the highest quality lab-grown diamonds using state-of-the-art technology. Here's a detailed look at the fascinating process behind their creation:

The Two Main Methods

1. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT):

- Seed Placement: A small diamond seed is placed in a carbon source.

- High Pressure: The seed is subjected to extreme pressures of about 5-6 GPa.

- High Temperature: The setup is then heated to temperatures between 1300-1600°C.

- Lab-Grown Diamond Growth: Under these conditions, carbon atoms precipitate on the seed, forming a Lab-Grown diamond crystal over several days to weeks.

2. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD):

- Seed Placement: A thin slice of Lab-Grown diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber.

- Gas Introduction: A carbon-rich gas, like methane, is introduced into the chamber.

- Plasma Activation: The gasses are ionized into plasma using microwaves or lasers.

- Lab Grown Diamond Growth: Carbon atoms from the gas bond to the Lab-Grown diamond seed, layer by layer, growing a Lab-Grown diamond crystal over a period of weeks.

Quality and Characteristics

Lab-grown diamonds from Astrea London are physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. They undergo rigorous quality checks to ensure they meet the highest standards. The benefits include:

- Sustainability: Lab-grown diamonds have a significantly lower environmental impact compared to traditional mining.

- Ethical Production: Free from the ethical concerns associated with diamond mining.

- Cost-Effective: Generally more affordable than mined diamonds, offering excellent value without compromising on quality.

How do I choose between HPHT and CVD Lab Diamonds?

We do not believe that one method is better than the other, nor that there is a difference. What matters is the final product and the true quality of the stone, which is determined by our gemologists’ assessment and the IGI/GIA certification.

● Both CVD and HPHT technologies can create Lab-Grown diamonds of any colour, clarity, and size.

● All our supply is Type II, the most chemically pure Lab-Grown diamonds available.

● Both methods can produce D colours, VVSL1, and FL diamonds.

● HPHT generally yields higher colour, while CVD tends to produce higher clarities.

● Most Lab-Grown diamonds under 1ct are usually HPHT for cost-effectiveness.

● Between 1 – 2.5/3 carats, the market supplies both CVD and HPHT equally.

● For Lab-Grown diamonds above 2.5/3 carats, CVD is more common, resulting in larger stones.

Even diamonds with the same certified characteristics can differ in appearance, and therefore it is key for a gemologist to physically assess each diamond to ensure you get the best quality.
